TedTalks. Better Than Redbox

TedTalks webpage

Choose a cool TedTalk this way…

I feature Ted.com online video podcasts quite often on Saturday Morning’s Post. As a social media coach, these talks often provide me with new insights into trends and differing viewpoints on countless topics. As they say, TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Ted.com started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, and Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. I think TedTalks simply feed your mind.

Since June 2006, TEDTalks have been made available online on the TED website, YouTube, and iTunes. As the list grows ever-larger, deciding which video to watch becomes a bit tougher. It’s kind of like standing in front of the Red Box choosing your movie of the night. Pick, just pick one!

The Wealth of the Web Runs Deep, A Sequel

The original article, The Wealth of the Web Runs Deep, posted as a Saturday Morning’s Post in March received some of our best response ever. So, as a blogger, what do you do with that information?  You find out what’s hot and repeat it.

Using web analytics, a.k.a. stats, you’re able to find out so many things. For instance, you find what your audience likes or doesn’t, you find what days and times get the most response, and find what your average response is to each blog. Careful web analysis is worthwhile and critical to success.

Enough with the shop talk, Saturdays here at Social Energizer are for fun. With that in mind, a sequel to The Wealth of the Web Runs Deep is in order. Here are five websites that will help build your ‘web wealth’. Today, we have two time-lapse videos by Mindrelic, an interactive sunrise and new cool canoe. I want it.

Vacationing with the Queen of Lists

My husband, Tom, and I start our vacation this weekend. We’ll be exploring the Mississippi River area with my sister and her husband in a 32-foot motor home. Yeah! Fun here we come!

Packing will be tricky. But, as unofficial Queen of Lists, I will take this challenge head on. I have a camping list dating back about ten plus years from when our family camped regularly. Everything but the kitchen sink is in there.

It’s been awhile, but the secret to happy camping is in the planning. So… being married to the Internet, as I am, what do I do next? Of course I check online for more help in making sure I don’t forget anything. And what do I find, but this awesome web tool ‘smart’ packing list, that generates an intelligent list based on what type of travel you’re actually doing! I highly recommend it, but when it goes to print the minimum list is five pages long! So personally, I just save it to a pdf and view it on screen.

Packing List Generator

What this list features is a last minute check on important things like getting the cat to your daughter’s for pet-sitting, unplugging stuff, and getting the garbage out. You wouldn’t want any unhappy surprises when you get back, would you? After that, it goes through the usual list of clothing, hygiene, health, money, and documents that you may need. But then, it goes through everything you may not have thought of like: sleeping, cooking, sports, gadgets, and entertainment items.

The only thing it missed was the gift for my husband, Tom, as we celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. Hmmm, guess it didn’t know. Happy Anniversary, honey!

Keeping it Light with Dark Roasted Blend

Today is Saturday. Let’s have a little light entertainment with our own dark roasted blend. Today’s article comes directly from the awesome website of Dark Roasted Blend. It is the home of “all things weird and wonderful, updated daily” and describes themselves as a highly visual online magazine. I’ll say. One look around and about five mouse clicks later and it’s easy to be addicted. I simply do not know how they have kept this up since 2005.

Here are my 3 top picks from this site:

Stupidity

In honor of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) in Oshkosh, WI may I suggest the category Airplanes. Here you will find many different types of airplanes, plus a look back at the glamorous ‘stewardesses’ of yesterday.

Love Hate reversred in mirrorPacMan cemetary

Coin spiral

Then move on to the Travel category. Oh my, I think I may have driven the “Top Most Dangerous Roads in the World” between Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico back in the 80s. If you could pass the driven in front of you stuck their arm out their window. Then when you passed you’d usually find it lead you into a hairpin turn in the other direction! I won’t even go into the crosses along the roadside.

And finally, at right is a brief glimpse of one of their daily blogs entitled “Philosophy 101”. I encourage you to continue onto their site to see the rest and far more.

Technology, 3D Printers and Chocolate

Many of you might have seen the amazing 3D wrench video that has recently circulated in email and social networking sites like Facebook. It is about the “next great technological disruption” and talks about revolutionaries tinkering on machines that “turn digital bits into physical atoms”. Basically, they downloaded plans for a wrench into a 3D Printer and recreated it as a ‘new and improved model’.Monkey Wrench

For this week’s Saturday Morning Post, I decided that even though quite a few people may have seen it, it still fits well for this blog. On Saturdays, I like to have something fun and new that either deals with life and family or cutting-edge technology. …BUT before I posted it, I had a hunch that I better make sure it was ‘legit’, so of course, I checked out my favorite site for Internet hoaxes, Snopes.com. I’m happy to report that the 3D printer by Z Corporation is in fact real. The Snopes article about the 3D printer says not only that it’s TRUE, but that it actually first appeared in an article in November of 2010. Adding to the credibility of the story is the fact that the National Geographic Channel produced the video.

It’s really cool. Watch it now!

So, where does chocolate come in?

Chocolates 1photo © 2007 Windell Oskay | more info (via: Wylio That’s why you’re here right? You really want to know why I added chocolate to this story. Wrenches, printers and chocolates? How does that all fit together? That’s the good part. University of Exeter researchers in England have replaced the plastic, like that used in the wrench, and are using chocolate instead. Yum!

Lead scientist Dr. Liang Hao said you “do a 3D shape –layer by layer, printing chocolate instead of ink, like if you were layering 2D paper to form a 3D shape.” He hopes to take this all a step further and promote it through cyberspace. He plans to start with a chocolate-oriented website, include design, digital manufacturing and social networking. Hmmm, sounds like another way that social media has become a mainstream method of bringing new products to market.

a plan for people to design their own chocolates online. Can we start now?

Lazy Summer Days Mean It’s Time for a Rube Goldberg Machine

My favorite ‘reset switch’ is watching a Rube Goldberg machine and here’s one that is really unique. It’s called Melvin the Magical Mixed Media Machine or Melvin the Machine for short. This four minute chain reaction craziness will grab your attention and leave you laughing. I like the fact that the people from hey, hey, hey have done it one better by video-taping the audience as they watch it. They have ‘branded’ Melvin as a a non-identity identity as set forth in the terms of the contest they participated in. Pretty clever.

5 Online Ideas for a ‘Happy’ Independence Day

Summer is here in Northeast Wisconsin and it looks like it should be a sunny and warm weekend. That’s why I think the Independence Day Holiday is the happiest of all holidays. Endure one of our winters and you’ll understand why. Oh, I know it’s about the celebration of our freedom, honor to those who envisioned this great nation and set up a strategy to build a nation that endures far into the future. A strategy that other countries will try to copy. I know that and truly appreciate it. But more simply, I think this holiday breaks down into happiness.

Here are 5 things online that feature ‘happy’. Enjoy!… and be happy.

  1. The Happy Movie. Can you measure happiness?Happy – A Documentary Trailer from Wadi Rum Films on Vimeo.
  1. A blog on happiness –Happy Thoughts for the Day
  2. The Happy News. Real news. Compelling Stories. Always Positive (I might use this one a lot in the future).
  3. Going through hardship? You’ll find this Ted Talks “Dan Gilbert asks, Why are we happy?” to be a revelation.
  4. Happy Neuron. Brain Fitness for Life. I like this a ‘brain fitness program’. Stimulate you attention, language, memory, visual spatial and executive function skills. Hmmm, sounds good to me. Happy neurons, happy me.

The Future of Medicine, Could You Live to 150?

Happy Saturday Morning Post, everyone! With the dreary weather in the midwest this month, I think it’s time to look at something enlightening. Something that is sure to get you out of any weather-produced funk.

Yes, I’m back to Ted Talks with a video presented by Dr. Daniel Kraft, inventor and innovator. He is a Stanford- and Harvard-trained physician-scientist with over 20 years of experience in clinical practice, biomedical research and innovation. He is now chairing the FutureMed program at Singularity University.

In the video below (click here if video does not launch), he speaks on how rapidly developing technologies such as low cost genomic sequencing, artificial intelligence, telemedicine, robotics, 24/7 body wearable monitors, smart pills, stem cells, synthetic biology, gene therapy, mobile phone Apps and crowd sourced health data affect the future of healthcare and medicine. Yes, all that. He even talks about how social media will have a role with these new technologies. This is definitely worth a look if you: work in medicine, work in a lab, would ever be a patient, or would like to never be a patient… you get the idea, there is something here for everyone.

Daniel Kraft: Medicine’s Future? There’s An App For That

What do you think? Is it too scary? Too promising? How will it lower health costs? Or won’t it? Time will tell, but at least, as Einstein would say: it’s not doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. These technologies will change things.

Social Media – Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown get it right

Concert at Lambeau Field Green Bay WisconsinI am excited to be attending today’s Lambeau Field concert, their first major concert event -ever. People are actually coming from all over the country for this concert. That is the pull that Kenny Chesney possesses. Add in the Zac Brown Band and you know it will be an unforgettable concert. Then just for fun, add in  other major performers like Billy Currington and Uncle Kracker -FUN. Make it a SIX HOUR concert, with a FOUR HOUR tailgate and you have an event fit for Green Bay, Wisconsin. In Northeast Wisconsin, it will be a great day.

In terms of social media, who gets it right? I’d say musicians in general, then a bit more narrowly, American Country Music, and most of all, Kenny Chesney and the Zac Brown Band. What makes them special? It’s more than just their unbelievably awesome music. It’s the strategy, the content and the connections. They are able to ‘package’ their musical talents perfectly. First, they energize a huge amount of people via online and offline channels, then they pull them into their venue aka the concert and keep them for years as enthusiastic fans. Did I mention that people are coming from all over the nation? That’s pull. Yes, they have it right.

No Shoes RadioI’m a huge fan of the Zac Brown Band. After reading this Green Bay Press Gazette article I discovered that besides their great music, why I was pulled in to their whole ‘schtick’. It’s their work ethic! And the same determination every small business person in America displays every day. Up at dawn, many irons in the fire and do it all over until you have success. That’s what will get you there. And they did. Yes, there are good lessons to be learned here.

For Kenny, one example of his company’s social media aptitude is this year’s online creation of No Shoes Radio as critiqued by that damn redhead. As she notes, Kenny does so much ‘right’. From providing the service, to the consistent branding, to the content and finally to the FUN. She says Kenny gets the content right and that that’s the one important thing, but I think it’s more than that. It’s the relationship, that’s what he really gets right. I should know I saw him perform at the Resch Center in Green Bay about ten years ago and I’m still a fan.

Dancing Merengue Dog

Only in the world of social media can things like this be shared and become viral. If you haven’t seen this wonderful Merengue Dancing Dog yet then you need to take a few minutes right now. It’s great! I just got back from Mexico and never saw anything like this there!
